Why are some of us affected worse by the Covid-19 Coronavirus disease?

Not every person is affected in the same way by the infection caused by the coronavirus. According to the findings of the scientific studies conducted so far, the effects of the coronavirus can be roughly classified as follows:

- 40% of patients do not experience any symptoms (asymptomatic),
- 50% of patients have mild symptoms,
- 10% of patients become seriously ill.

We know that the rate of mortality among people who are diagnosed with positive test results is between 1% and 2%. However, for now, if we assume that the people being tested are only those who experience serious symptoms and apply to healthcare institutions due to these complaints, we can easily think that the mortality rate of the corona virus may fall below 1%.

The majority of the 10% of patients with serious symptoms rest at home, even in a bad condition. Only a small part of them need to be connected to a respiratory support unit due to infection and pneumonia (pneumonia) and hospitalized. The majority of these patients are those with underlying conditions and diagnoses in their clinical history and those over a certain age.

The fact that the effects of the virus on humans are so variable actually distinguishes the coronavirus from many other diseases. Its effects and outcomes vary more than most diseases that have been tried to be treated until now. The reason for this is not the virus itself. The diversity of the effects caused by the virus is actually caused by the variety of responses of each human body to the virus.
When a virus infects our body, our immune system responds and fights the virus. Inflammation occurs in the body in infectious diseases such as flu and coronavirus and body temperature rises as a result. But in extreme cases, our immune system goes crazy and becomes more damaging than the virus itself. The reason why many auto-immune diseases such as Celiac, Psoriasis, Diabetes, MS, Rheumatoid Arthritis or some types of cancer damage our body is that our immune system overreacts or reacts in an incorrect manner. In coronavirus infections, blood vessels open and invite defense cells to the site of infection. While this is a good measure, when the veins become too permeable, our lungs begin to fill with more fluid. These destructive overreactions are called Cytokine Storm or Cytokine Release Syndrome. The Spanish Influenza (1918 Flu Pandemic), H5N1 Avian Influenza Disease and 2003 SARS-1 disease, which are relatively recent and had similar global destructive effects, were lethal for exactly the same reason.
