Does smoking have an affect?

Since the corona virus is an upper and lower respiratory tract disorder and it enters through the nose and throat and settles in the lungs, it is assumed that smoking, which seriously damages the respiratory tract, further escalates the infection caused by coronavirus. However, some recent research did not find a remarkable relationship between smoking and the level of hospitalization of smokers. Some studies even argue that smoking might have the opposite effect. The main assumptions of the findings of these studies are based on the immune-mediating and immune-stabilizing effect of nicotine or another substance contained in cigarettes. Another group of researches with similar findings are based on the assumption that upper and lower respiratory tract occupancy in smokers may be at a level that prevents the virus from settling. It should be noted, however, that smoking puts you in the risk group for many diseases and its effects on the coronavirus are still controversial. Perhaps the only thing that can be said for now is that the withdrawal effects caused by quitting smoking should not be underestimated and may create unexpected risks in the early post-quit period.
